Expansion Joints / Compensators

An expansion or movement joint are designed to absorb the contraction and heat induced expansion in the construction industry to hold parts together by absorbing vibration and to allow movement caused by earthquakes or ground settlement.  They are commonly found in buildings, bridges, railway tracks, piping systems, ships and other structures.

These Joints are also used in industrial piping systems because of its ability to accommodate movement due to thermal and mechanical changes in the system.  Metal components change size due to temperature change.  Fluids move through the piping system by pressure created by pumps or gravity.  Fluids under pressure occupy the volume of their container.

Fabric Expansion Joint

Fabric Expansion Joints are used in the following Industries:

Rubber Expansion Joint

(For Liquids & Gasses)

Rubber expansion joints are bellow shaped mandrels wrapped in rubber and fabric reinforced sheets.  Steel wires, metal rings and reinforced rubber are added for additional reinforcement.  To pressurize all layers together, the mandrel is covered in a nylon ply.  These joints are used to accommodate pressure loads, reduce noise, isolate sources of vibration and neutralize the axial, lateral, angular and torsional stresses.

Rubber Expansion Joints are used in the following Industries:

Metal Expansion Joint

(For Thermal & Pressure)

Metal expansion joints are pliable connections used in pipelines, containers and machines to assist expansion and vibration due to thermal changes or pressure.  The flexible part if the expansion joint (the bellow) is made from thin layers of heat resistant stainless steel.
